Monster I’d Like to Fight: Leaf Spirit

Monster I'd Like to Fight: Leaf Spirit

The true origin of the leaf spirit is unknown. They have existed since ancient times, as encounters with them appear in stories passed down through generations. Sometimes they are playful or mischievous; other times, they are angry and wrathful. Their moods are as varied as the wind. Some stories link them to the trickster fey realm, while others connect them to the haunting spirit world. Few associate them with their cousins, the air elementals.

A leaf spirit’s voice sounds like whispers among rustling leaves and scratching twigs. They most commonly take a humanoid shape but can also transform into other forms, including small animals. Their form often reveals their mood: a bulky, frightening appearance typically indicates aggression.

Leaf spirits are unbound, chaotic creatures with minimal needs, focusing instead on their desires. Often, this desire is for entertainment, but it can be as varied as those of most creatures. It is not unheard of for a leaf spirit to seek knowledge or choose to guard an old forest. However, even these desires may change over time.

Actions

Multiattack. The leaf spirit makes three Claw attacks.

Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (2d4 + 4) slashing damage.

Whirling Dash (Recharge 4–6). The leaf spirit moves up to 30 feet in a straight line to an unoccupied space. This movement doesn’t provoke opportunity attacks and the leaf spirit can move through the space of other creatures. If the leaf spirit enters a creature’s space, that creature must make a DC 14 Strength saving throw. On a failed save, the creature takes 17 (5d6) piercing damage and has the prone condition. On a successful save, the creature takes half as much damage only.

Bonus Actions

Gust. The leaf spirit blasts a gust of air at a creature it can see within 30 feet of it. The creature must succeed on a DC 14 Strength saving throw or be pushed up to 10 feet away.

Change Shape. The leaf spirit transforms into the shape of a Medium or Small creature it has seen before. This new form is made of air, leaves, twigs, and debris. Its statistics, other than size, don’t change. Any equipment it is wearing or carrying isn’t transformed.
