The scroll of spellstealing began in error, born from the ambition of a scribe who aimed to craft a scroll of counterspell. It was a task he thought simple, but he miscalculated. Instead of a counterspell, the scroll he made absorbed less powerful spells instead of countering them. At first, he saw this as a failure. But soon, it became clear he had created something special.
This scribe, an eager wizard looking to make his mark, saw his chance. He brought the scroll to a guild of arcane tricksters, a group that always sought new ways to enhance their magic. The guild had long needed a method for their members to steal spells without inherent talent. The wizard’s scroll was the answer.
The guild master saw the value in the wizard’s mistake. She knew this scroll could change everything. To make the scroll durable and increase its effectiveness, the guild used demon hides and other exotic materials from creatures resistant to magic. The scrolls were sometimes sewn into clothing to keep them hidden and provide protection when needed.
The guild kept the scroll’s creation a secret. Their scribes, using the original wizard’s notes, perfected the process. Each scroll could be customized to fit the needs of their thieves, whether novice or veteran. The scroll of spellstealing became essential to their heists, assassinations, and other covert operations.
There are rumors of greater scrolls of spellstealing that are capable of absorbing even more powerful spells.
Scroll of Spellstealing
Scroll, Uncommon
As a reaction, which you take when you see a creature within 60 feet of you casting a spell, you can use this scroll to capture the spell if it is of 3rd level or lower. The spell has no effect and this scroll transforms into a spell scroll containing the captured spell. If the spell is 4th level or higher, the spell is unaffected and the scroll retains its magic.
