The Vault: Gravegun

Found it in a pile o’ bones, half-buried. Looked like a busted hand-crossbow hilt at first, but the grip fit my mitt too sweet to be junk. “Gravegun.” That’s what it whispered, I’m sure of it now. The moment I touched it, I got this tingle in me teeth. Ooh, then I knew ’twas special.

First time I pulled the trigger, it bucked like a cranky worg. Shot a hole clean through Ol’ Nort’s cookpot, and he’s still screamin’ at me for it. But oh, the feeling! My whole arm felt like it’d been tickled by death itself, cold and cracklin’. Turns out it don’t shoot lead—it’s spittin’ bone and bad juju. Necrotic somethin’ or other. And sometimes it’s faster than me fingers can squeeze. Bap-bap! Two shots when I only pulled it once.

The trick is keepin’ it fed. Gravegun’s got an appetite, see? Regular ol’ bullets won’t do. No, this little beast wants bones, meat, marrow—corpses. They don’t gotta be fresh (lucky me), but they gotta be proper dead. Crack a skull, snap a femur, pluck a rib or two, and the gun’s belly’s full for a spell. It’s slow work, but I’ve got a hatchet and a song in me heart: “Chop-chop, cleave n’ stop, load the shot that makes ’em drop!”

Now every gob in the warren’s watchin’ me with hungry eyes. They’re thinkin’ about takin’ it. But I’m the fastest shot in the tunnels now. I’ll keep feedin’ the gravegun. And it’ll keep feedin’ me.
