Monster I’d Like to Fight: Chilasa

Monster I'd Like to Fight: Chilasa

In the icy depths, demons like the chilasa roam freely. Covered in uneven patches of white or grey fur, their imposing figures sport large, ram-like horns curving backward. These aggressive and swift creatures employ sharp claws and powerful hind legs to assault and immobilize their prey. Typically, chilasa are drawn to frigid landscapes due to the nature of their summoning.

Summoned amidst intense blizzards, chilasa manifest through a dark ritual involving a sacrificial ceremony. The chosen humanoid sacrifice is exposed, bound, and left to endure the bitter cold. As the victim succumbs to the freezing conditions, a chilasa emerges from the lifeless form, clawing its way through a transient portal that materializes within the corpse.

Occasionally, survivors of a chilasa attack may venture to nearby towns or cities, seeking aid from heroes to combat this formidable creature. The recounted details, however, often lead to confusion with yetis, ape-like beings found in mountainous regions. Regrettably, a group of adventurers prepared for a yeti encounter finds themselves ill-equipped to face the distinct challenges posed by a chilasa.

Charge. If the chilasa moves at least 20 feet straight toward a creature and then hits it with a Claw attack on the same turn, that target must succeed on a DC 17 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone. If the target is prone, the chilasa can make one Rend attack against it as a bonus action.

Magic Resistance. The chilasa has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

Actions

Multiattack. The chilasa makes two Claw attacks.

Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 23 (4d8 + 5) slashing damage.

Rend. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 5 ft., one prone creature. Hit: 19 (4d6 + 5) slashing damage and the target has the grappled condition (escape DC 17). Until the grapple ends, the chilasa can’t use Rend on another target.

Howling Blast (Recharge 5–6). The chilasa lets out a howl infused with freezing air in a 60-foot cone. Each creature in the area must make a DC 17 Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, a creature takes 22 (5d8) cold damage and has the restrained condition until the end of its next turn. On a successful save, a creature takes half as much damage only.
