Many centuries ago, the druids of the Frostbite Weald were under attack by an army of undead. In preparation their most skilled artisans created suits of Sylvan Scale Armor with properties that would aid them in repelling the unholy host.
With the ability to move through the forest stealthily and the added protection of the scale mail armor, the druids with elite ranger units were able to strike at the vampiric generals with surprise leaving a disorganized horde of zombies and skeletons which dispersed or were easily destroyed.
Sylvan Scale Armor
Armor (Scale Mail), Uncommon (Requires Attunement)
This armor consists of a coat and leggings of leather covered with overlapping pieces of preserved wood, much like the scales of a fish. The suit includes gauntlets.
While wearing this armor you gain the following effects:
Green Thumb. This item has 3 charges. You can expend a charge as an action to cast the speak with plants spell. The armor regains all expended charges at dawn each day.
Friend of the Forest. Plant creatures will not regard you as hostile unless you harm them.
Natural Camouflage. This armor does not impose disadvantage on your Dexterity (Stealth) checks when you are in a forest or obscured by plants.
Story hooks for DMs:
- The adventuring party is travelling in or near a forest when they hear the sounds of battle. A treant and two trees it animated are surrounded and being attacked by a group of ogres. If the party does nothing, the ogres overwhelm the treant. The ogres run away after half of them fall in battle if the adventurers attack them. The treant will reward the party with the Sylvan Scale Armor for their help.
- While exploring an underground cavern or dungeon, the party comes upon a chamber filled from floor to ceiling with dry, spiky plants growing from the soil. The growth is so thick that characters can’t move within the room without taking damage from the piercing thorns. Cutting or burning the plants down causes them to shoot spikes in all directions. If an adventurer walks to the center of the chamber without harming the plants, a pedestal rises with the Sylvan Scale Armor on it.
- A famous elven artisan named Lythiena has announced that she will gift a suit of Sylvan Scale Armor to whomever can bring her the fresh fruit of an ancient tree in the middle of a nearby forest. The fruit spoils quickly and the forest is dangerous and difficult to traverse.
