The Vault: Needler Dart

In a small village on the edge of civilization lived a hunter along with his pet falcon. The bird was fierce and loyal, and they fought together in many battles. The creature was more than a companion—it was his heart. But one day, the falcon fell in a skirmish, and the hunter grieved deeply.

A necromancer in the village, drawn by the mighty falcon’s passing sought to assuage hunter’s sorrow. She called the bird’s spirit back from the land of the dead and bound it within an magic dart. Enchanted with the bird’s essence, the dart flew straight and true, always returning to the hand of its master. But it also had learned a mysterious magic from the other side; any creature struck by the dart was tethered to its user by an ethereal thread. The thread caused intense pain, but it also made the dart’s wielder tougher when it was broken.

Such as it was, the hunter continued his adventures with his loyal companion at his side until the end of his days. Decades later, within the ruins of a watchtower, the dart was found cradled in the arms of a skeleton. A small note attached to the dart read: “Needler, faithful companion. Her spirit soars eternal. Treat her well.”
