I found the book collecting dust in the corner of an old curio shop. The cover was worn, its edges frayed, but it tingled when I touched it. The shopkeeper eyed me with a knowing look but said nothing as I handed over the coins.
That night, I opened the book and felt a rush of power. Without warning, a burst of flame shot from my hands, scorching the wall. Burning hands, I thought, with a mixture of awe and fear. Over the next few days, I discovered other spells – magic missile, invisibility, fly. Each one another spell from a wizard’s repertoire.
Rumor had it the book was created for a prince who couldn’t master the arcane arts. Maybe that’s why it found its way to me, a simple mercenary with no magic in his blood. The fey, they said, liked to play tricks with these books, swapping them with real wizards’ tomes for a laugh. I wondered if somewhere, a wizard was cursing his luck, while I reveled in mine.
The spells came randomly, and sometimes, nothing at all. One night, surrounded by wolves, I flipped through the book frantically, praying for a spell to save me. I was lucky – a lightning bolt arced out, scattering the beasts. Now, I carry the book always; a little magic is better than none at all.
