The Vault: Soulbound Lantern

In the land of the dead, tethered to the riverman’s boat, the soulbound lantern guides lost spirits forth. Born from the withered hands of a necromancer, this item harbors the ethereal echoes of departed souls.

Once, a gravedigger, ensnared in the necromancer’s apprenticeship, carried forth the lantern into the realms where shades roamed. Tasked to reclaim the wandering spirits, the lantern’s flame danced, ensnaring ghosts in its spectral allure. Guided by the gravedigger’s silent incantations, it embraced lingering souls, imprisoning them within its muted glow.

In the rituals of exorcism, the soulbound lantern played its role, a silent accomplice to the exorcist’s choreography. The shadows of the departed would writhe, ensnared within the lantern’s confinement.

Soulbound Lantern

Wondrous Item (Lantern), Uncommon

While holding this lantern, you can use an action and touch a humanoid that has been dead no longer than 24 hours to capture its soul within the lantern. The lantern can contain only one soul at time. While it contains a soul, it casts bright light in a 30-foot radius and dim light for an additional 30 feet. Once you use this feature, you cannot do so again until the next dawn.

As an action, you can free a contained soul to summon a specter. It acts on your initiative count immediately after your turn. It obeys your verbal commands (no action required by you). If you don’t issue any, it takes the Dodge action and uses its move to avoid danger. The specter lasts until it is reduced to 0 hit points, you use a bonus action to dismiss it, or one minute has passed.
